This helped a lot. Sometimes I really have to hold the physicist in me at bay...

Regarding loop shaping I'll continue elsewhere...

Have you seen the Wicker Man, they burn physicists in these parts :p ?

So you think I was completely wrong with trying to tame this beast via a regular supply of alcoholic beverages, i.e. kind of "water boarding" the physicist in me? EPIC FAIL

I found this thread during search for loop shaping.

BTW: the trajectory is a result of "proper" application of force. Thus two of the BIG THREE are already covered by the "proper force" principle.

Hmmm. Actually, this leaves me in a big mess.

Kind regards, Norbert
Hi Norbert,
personally I don't like the SLP concept (it isn't really a principle) being part in a concept like the "essentials of fly casting". The SLP was meant to ONLY refer to tip path DURING acceleration. But when talking about shaping loops tip path during deceleration may even have a bigger impact - especially on the loop front.
And then as Paul already pointed out it is tight to tight loops and tight loops only. Aiming for wide loops (sometimes in nymph fishing for example) and SLP isn't proper anymore in my understanding.

The Big Three are not meant to be the key factors of loop shaping!
In fact loop shaping is one of the three points to focus on.
Trajectory will always be there and it may even match for a cast when force aplication was inproper (too uneven to be more precise ;) ). I have set trajectory within the big three, because 90% of the casters I see don't really care much of it. To care may help to improve about a significant degree in my experience.

About the 5 essentials what I miss most is: rotation at the right time (positioning the rotation during the casting stroke).
Proper force application to me is smooth increase in rod bend during accel.. All forms of sudden increase in rod bend usually cause serious trouble in the fly leg.

Hope that helps.
