I couldn't agree more, Magnus - and grumpiness is not only allowed or expected - it's called for. And I was recently told that once you're past 40, you're allowed to be grumpy, which means I've missed several years of grumpiness.

I've absolutely no idea why "they" had to invent a "trout spey rating"... What's wrong with a 11'6" two-double-handed rod for a 7-wt one-single-hand line? And even the little bit of logic (or common ground) that was beginning to emerge in the switch-rod department has gone bollocks, since someone began making rods in the switch-length-range that were casting "real" double-two-hand lines as far as weight went.

Jesus - I've heard it argued that the AFTMA/AFFTA-system was confusing for beginners and hence needed change. How the Hell do they think beginners are finding their way around now? Even SA, who's been champions of the AFFTA-system for decades are now producing lines that are a full rating heavier than designated "to carry multiple flies" or "load modern fly rods".

Easy answer, money.

And grumpy, you should have started from childhood, been grumpy since birth, and have the pics to prove :D

Back in the olden times, when PVC lines were young-ish, it was fairly normal to use a DT10 on a DH rod, that was a 90ft line. More ambitious casters could find a couple of 40 (or 50) yard lines, still #10 at 30ft - just longer. Specialist WF lines highlighted a flaw in the original Line Standards.

The Spey Line ratings I can actually understand, in the sense I can see a need for a Spey line Standard. I assume the authors of the Spey Standard saw that a line weighed at 30ft tells you less than the head-weight and the heads for Spey lines can be long. Problem comes when you have a line rating system based on weight at 30ft overlapping with a system based on head-weight - which is why A Trout Spey #4 is roughly a #7 on the Standard line Standard. (Which is a rather silly name for a Standard.)

IMHO the two standards seem rough and ready, cobbled together by committee. Even rougher and readier if you try and unify them. IMHO the system for measuring and rating lines needs an overhaul.

Has anyone else noticed that the major line makers seem to publish less information of the lengths, profiles and weights of their lines than they did just a few years ago?
