I fished Bolgoda lake February 2009 and do recognise three places on that second link "magazine" Nine hours of motor boat with driver was 100 euros and it was arranged by a local angler. He did cast lures and got one "ladyfish looking big eyed fish. I did fly fish and did not catch anything but it was a great day.

Then I fished the "river mouth" about an hour around sunrise in Beruwela three or four times. Again nothing up but did loose a fight with fish which was very strong in the current there was. I mostly did Spey cast using 12'6'' 8wt because there was a lot of interested people and dogs so overhead casting was not safe.

One 4h trip to an rocky island nearby did cost 30 euros and because of height I fished there I saw a lot of "following" fish but they didn't bite. I did also snorkel dive there as well and saw many beautiful species I have seen in aquariums which was very nice experience.

Sounds good! Did you hire a boat or simply wade the beaches?

Cheers, Paul

...wade the rocks. :) gts are around reefs and rocky shorebreaks there mostly- or atleast there are easier to find them. Tough terrain.
But love it. One must gain some respect at the locals showing some fish, till then they see you as some strange white man doing his stupid thangs. They catch their share with trolling and bait.
Hired a local ffman and a bloody expensive boat with guide at Kirinda, which was a nice learning, but kind of a "pay for sex"- experience, and not really satisfying. Details later.
All fish caught when I was guiding myself.

And when I say "fish are plenty" I don't mean it's easy fishing.
Far from that.
