Hi Guys,
so I'm looking for a superfast warmwater sinking line for an 8 and/or 10 weight and possibly even a six, for freshwater Snakehead and Jungle Perch. Is there such a thing and does RIO make one?
This year I'm going to fish heavily guarded Clousers down in 20-30 ft of water. Knocking on wood sort of fishing at depth.
Thanks, Paul

As far as I can see, Rio has this: http://www.rioproducts.com/fly-lines/sa ... -sink-tip/
And Scientific has this: http://buy.scientificanglers.com/lines/ ... -long.html
From 200 to 450 grains, you'll find one that suits both the 6, 8 and 10. The Leviathan from Rio has a very short head, the Scientific almost twice as long.

Hi Paul
May I suggest a leadcore shootinghead to get that deep fast?
I know you don't like heavy headed wf's but it will probably suit your fishing
Cheers

I have actually cast lead core shooting heads before, about 25 years ago when trying to catch large browns at Ardleigh with budgies. I was planning on something a little more subtle and a lot less dangerous!
Sink tips are not what I'm after here; I need a full sinking line to deal with the depths.
Cheers, Paul

It's not dangerous, and you're a better caster today
Otherwise, just make your own from T8-T20
Cheers

Does a leadcore SH offer the sensitivity to identify between tapping a log and tapping a fish? That's going to be key for me, because I know it's an absolute jungle down there and I don't want to be setting on stumps. My leader setup is going to need to be rope, because when I set the hook I have to pull the fish backwards. Having said this, if I'm going to break or lose lines then losing some lead core may be the way to go
I do think it's important that the line doesn't land like a brick, although whether this will stop them taking at depth I don't know, but it certainly won't make things easier!
Another thing that needs to be considered, is if I hook a ten or hopefully a twenty pound Snakehead, will the shooting line destroy my fingers? When fighting these fish I don't give them line; I point the butt at them and pull them backwards. If I can't hold that line then I'm in the shit. Consequently a full DT may be a better option? I was thinking 6-7" second, but this may be because I have a lot of experience fishing these lines from the ages of 15-25.
Cheers, Paul

Paul,
If it needs to be a warmwater line then I think chances of getting a fast DT sinker are small. Presume you will be stripping flies?
I use a cutom cut T11 Outbound here in the sea and although it is not a tropical line, it is stiff, has memory and goes a little better when it is used in a warm environment. Better still was the type 8 Outbound that Rio discontinued a couple of years back, you will still pick up these in the USA from Ebay, smoother to cast than the T11, goes further and I think they may even sink a little deeper and quicker. I reckon they'll cope with the heat providing you are not fishing from a hot boat deck, wading (tray required) or off the bank it'll be fine.
Cheers
Ben

The leadcore heads I have has very little if any stretch to them, so that part is up to how sensitive and well developed your 6th sense isPaul Arden wrote:Does a leadcore SH offer the sensitivity to identify between tapping a log and tapping a fish?
Dude, the fool in charge of that is the one holding the hot potatoI do think it's important that the line doesn't land like a brick, although whether this will stop them taking at depth I don't know, but it certainly won't make things easier!

That depends on the shootingline you choose Thin mono sure, thick sinking coated, only if you have thin skin on your fingers....
Shootinghead is essentially making up your own WF to suit your needs, and you can pick the shootingline
Non stretch superstrong shootinglines:
http://www.monic.com/saltwater.cfm
Floating though...
Rio used to have a intermediate powerflex shootingline, but it seems to be discontinued
If you can handle it, the 50lbs slickshooter could be the deal for you, friend of mine use it for winterfishing for pike from his boat, less tangles, and easier handling with cold fingers
Scientific anglers has a intermediate coated shootingline.
Cheers

No I don't think I'll be stripping, more like feeling my way through the snags. I did a little of this for Barra in QLD and I'm sure I can take that method apply it to a bit more depth (maybe not quite 30ft, but certainly approaching 20) and I'm pretty sure this will work for Snakehead. Cold water lines turn to spaghetti in Malaysia and just don't shoot. Mostly I expect to be off a kayak again; there's no wading or bank fishing here.
Jungle Perch is different, that's a sink and then a fast strip. That's where the six weight comes in.
Cheers, Paul

Thanks Lasse, any idea how those behave on a warm deck/kayak? I think I'll drop Simon an email.
