Cheers,
Thomas

6 for trout and grayling, huh? I'm just gonna shoot from the hip here: PT Nymph, trailing shuck soft-hackle, Parachute Adams, trailing shuck Griffith's Gnat, some heavy caddis larva thing that looks really cool, a big bunny leech. How'd I do?
EDIT: Might trade in that caddis for a heavy scud thing that looks really cool, since i can always trim it to look like a caddis.
I grew up surrounded by fish, flies, and water.

Funny also that you mentioned flies which av recently be covered in the fly tying tutorials Paul asked me to write.
- PT Nymph - totally agree - what sizes do you like them?
http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/s ... part-4-ptn
- trailing shuck soft-hackle - do you have a more specific example?
- Parachute Adams - :-) - no tying instructions to that one, but parachute flies were covered here - http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/s ... klinkhamer
- trailing shuck Griffith's Gnat - I sometime tie them with a piece of sparkle yarn / tinsel - is that what you meant? The general one was covered in this article - http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/s ... -first-fly
- some heavy caddis larva thing that looks really cool - stay tuned - there will be one coming in next fridays Sexyloops Fly Tying School :-) http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/s ... ddis-larva
- a big bunny leech. - that is something missing in my flybox. Do you have a good example?

I'll take PTs in about 12-22 and in weighted and non-weighted (although I have fished some monster PTs as stonefly nymphs).t.z. wrote:

Soft hackle: Z-lon or sparkle yarn trailing shuck, dubbed body, moderate-length hackles (maybe even a wrap or two of stiff hackle in there).
GG:Yeah, just a sparse shuck out the back of Z-lon, sparkle yarn, etc.
Bunny leech: I grew up fishing with my father's Strip Leech design (which he based on other, earlier patterns). I think he may have tying instructions somewhere on the web, and it's a good place to start.

I should add that any short-list of flies needs to include a pair of very sharp, small scissors (folding if possible). Those are for "post-construction fly design" which is something I do a fair amount of on the water.

Very good tip. I carry a swiss army knive, and the scissors on those aren´t too bad either.Jason Borger wrote:I should add that any short-list of flies needs to include a pair of very sharp, small scissors (folding if possible). That is a great tip! Also a lolly pop stick or similar with Velcro glued to it for scruffing up Seal's Fur emergers.

Indeed! My father used to sell something for that very purpose (it was many moons ago when he had a mail-order business). And I agree with yo— having something to easily rough up a fly on-the-water is a useful bit of kit, indeed.Paul Arden wrote:That is a great tip!
