I already asked Paul, but I think it deserves it's own thread.
How much line do you guys carry when you hit your best distances?
I am talking about casting a MED.

Paul is between 88ft and 92ft.
I am around 85ft

Hi Bart, I'm definitely closer to your carry for my best distance. Probably because I struggle to carry any more
Need to work on improving this. Had some good advice from James, Paul and Lee over the weekend.

Hi Bart

Longer- better, as soon as you can keep tension in your line.
That is what I think.
Carring 95feet with little slack and waves in the loop wont give more distance then perfect back cast with 80 feet in the air.

Perfect BC with 95' in the air would be great, but this is why we practice, and now, when 130 is a new 120 i reckon its a matter of few practice sessions ha ha.

P.s
Looks like you doing awesome in Netherlands.Nice group you have there.

Thanks Michal.
I am wondering if I should focus on my carry. If everyone is really carrying 90ft, while competing, I should.
But I would like to be sure that this is the case.

Hi guys,

I actually find that the line becomes unstable with too much overhang behind the top of the loop. I usually aim to put the end of the head immediately behind the loop. With a tailing wind I carry a bit more and aim to put a few feet of overhang behind the front of the loop.

What I never want is to finish the stroke with the head in the loop!

At sea level I can usually carry 95’ and 1 mile above sea level 105’ (although I haven’t measured that for a decade). So I’m never carrying my maximum carry but always slightly less but with force.

Cheers, Paul

The important point here is that I am not talking about max carry.
Paul can you please simulate a distance cast and put the line down when you normally shoot it?
See if you carry 90ft. I would be very happy if you can try that for me ;)

Hi Bart! I’ve done it many times. :) My max carry is 95’ at sea level. I don’t carry this in competition but instead 88’6”-92’. I carry longest with a tail wind and shortest with no wind or a headwind.

I’ll measure up again tomorrow

Cheers, Paul

Any idea how much carry you lose with a very old line? Due to the expense of the MED I'm a bit loathe to retire them, hence my practice line is pretty much black and limp around my carry point. I've also noticed that I now struggle to carry what I think is the optimum (or perhaps my casting has gone down hill).

Good question James. I am wondering about this too.
The one I am measuring my carry with, also is in bad shape.
I already put a new one on and will try to measure it again.

Headlength plus the right amount of overhang, same as with a shooting head (all lines are shooting heads  )
The exact amount is damn hard to measure, and depends on the line, even the MED has manufacturing differences..
