1/2WT heavier lines

Hi Bernd,

In a recent FB discussion you say that you can only feel lines 1AFFTA heavier and not half as I understand correctly? I find that quite peculiar because I can always tell when a line is 1/2 heavier. 1/2 heavier is approx a 10% weight difference depending on line class.

Generally speaking with 1/2 wt lines with HT6 I recommend 5.5. With HT10 9.5. HT4 is always spot on. HT8 is the only one where I would go up and not down.

What does everyone else find?

The window between two classes is smaller than the deviation allowance for a single class, are you saying manyfacturers have gotten so good that they can hit the in between while still not hitting in the class?

That’s an interesting question. Since they are producing 1/2 line weights one would think so. I will start measuring all my lines when I can find some dealers’ scales.

I can immediately tell the difference between Rio gold (which I’ve been led to believe is .4 over) and SA mastery trout, which is true to weight...
But whether that’s related to the weight difference or taper I haven’t a scooby-do

Are you talking about noticing a difference between lines that are .5 over only or .5 over with the same taper... or does the taper make no difference?
I’d have thought it made as big a difference as the .5 in weight

There's also rod which are accurate from anywhere and harness back cast energy into forward delivery....

The half weight up lines are targeted at the middle in between but with the same up/down tolerance as true weights, so even if the line is one weight up it hits within the target tolerance. Guess where they mostly land

Gold is front heavy tapered, didn't know they where supposed to be over, I'll measure one!
And the trout taper is not, that alone makes a big difference in how a line feels to be cast, then there's different front tapers too, and it gets muddy real quick...

Just checked the Rio site, the target weight for the Gold is at 9,5 grams at 30 feet for a 5 weight. That's the upper limit tolerance for a true 5 weight. Will dig out one and measure asap.

Cheers Lasse... thats interesting, as someone on the US forum always refers to them as .4 over I’d just took it as correct it seemed so specific.... as you said earlier though has the front heavy taper, so it’s definitely noticeably different to the SA trout.
