Yep, the additive is a little varnish.

Soak the leader in the mixture so that it penetrates throughout, then hang the leader to dry for three to four weeks.

Hi Graeme

Have you tried viping the excess oil of after soaking it? Should cut down the drying time dramatically.
Are you hanging them outside? UV speeds up the drying time too.

The additive makes the oil dry faster, and turn it into a varnish, it also halts the penetration abilties of the oil. That hardly matters with braid though

Gotta try those leaders!

I know that dictum.com sells swedish raw, cold-bleached linseed oil. I guess that it is as low viscosity as in normal raw linseed oil, which is good for penetration. But it dries in 8 days instead of 3-4 weeks. Boiled linseed oil dries faster still, I think but has less penetration. I haven't used the cold-bleached oil but I think I will some day for wood at least, but maybe for leader making if I come to that.

G'day Lasse,

Yes, I sometimes wipe off the oil, but not for the purpose of quicker drying. I do it only to modify the final weight of the leader.

That dried boiled linseed oil adds the desired mass to the braid, helping it match the mass distribution of the fly line. Wiping off too much will have a negative impact. For some leaders, I'll even put a second coating on all or part of it.

It's important to remember that the oil/varnish is not just something to protect the braid. The leader doesn't work without that ingredient. In silk fly lines, it provides mass in the same way that the PVC coating provides mass on modern fly lines.

Cheers,
Graeme

Hi Graeme

I understood that it was to add weight and durability to the braid, its just that one normally wipes of excess oil when coating wood, because the excess prolongs the drying time significantly, and since you where drying yours for 3-4 weeks, I just wondered if that could be the reason :)

Yes that would be fantastic Lasse. I can send you a leader in exchange :)

Thanks, Paul

Oh, I now see why this thread started up. I didn't realise there was a front page about these leaders. I guess it's even more important for me to make that video about them now.

I'll see what I can do over the weekend.

Cheers,
Graeme
