When I first went to Malaysia I had to work out how to hit the free-risers in time. Underlining is the way to go. Overlining the rod slows the stroke - I assume this is because the rod bends more and then takes longer to unload. But mostly it’s the bending part that slows us down.

Take a soft glass rod and compare to a modern fast carbon rod. I’ve probably delivered the fly before the glass rod has finished its backcast :D

But it really is an easy experiment to make. Just put the hoops out on the water and hit them with different tackle combinations. The same applies to false casting too, but we rarely get the time for a false cast.

Cheers, Paul

Edit. I notice the difference between a line weight. That’s why with these 1/2 WT heavy lines I fish lines 1/2WT lighter. Of course not all rods appear to be optimised to my casting and certainly I find some rods far too stiff. It’s possible that they are being designed around heavier lines.

Another good example is the Barrio 125. That’s also somewhere in the middle weights. So on the HT6 I’d fish or cast the 125 5WT. That rod was essentially designed around an XXD 6.

Should I now post that clip of a modern carbon rod and a old glassfiber rod cast at the same time? 😉

You also fished the tcr 590 with the MED 6....

Yes I did. I found it too stiff with a 5 line for short fishing casts. Mind you I didn’t acquire the rod for fishing but instead distance casting. Not all rods are best underlined 😂

And fantastic - I know. Can’t wait to show you this crazy fishing!

Il be in Europe for two months next year, so don’t come then :D

It is very interesting because it’s the complete opposite of marketing blurb and what many people believe ie heavier line for quicker loading. I think that’s theory before practise.

GT125 WF5F fly line - target weight at 30 feet - 140 grains / 9.1 grams. - standard is 140

GT125 WF6F fly line - target weight at 30 feet - 160 grains / 10.4 grams.- standard is 160

Is it really though Paul?

You're saying it casts more quickly with a light load and a more heavily loaded rod slows the cast.

They are saying a line that's heavier loads the rod sooner. They are not necessarily claiming it casts faster.

I don't think what the line makers are saying contradicts your experience. They are telling people their casting will feel more positive with these heavy lines. However, maybe people are equating the two things with a false assumption that quicker loading equals quicker casting to a target.

Cheers,
Graeme

Quicker loading surely would be for faster shots? What it really is is deeper loading for slower shots, Graeme.

Are those measured weights TZ or pulled off the site? When I mentioned it to Mike he good me they target the upper end of the scale not the centre. This is why we need to weigh all this stuff.
