And that leaves 3 too narrow a casting arc...

How would you think about demoing this, and correcting the problem? Ie what drills?

I could demonstrate this by casting with very short power bursts. Quit subtle and with a very short stroke and arc.

The problem in this case would be the abrupt short burst and the short arc more of a consequence.

The triangle method seems like a good way to fix this. Focusing on a smooth acceleration. Maybe also using the paint brush throwing analogy.

I only think you rarely see the problem with a student in the way I described it. Better examples are more than welcome.

I commonly see it with a fixed casting arc. The caster’s loops change as he extends his line carry. First they start wide and gradually tighten and eventually tail. So it’s quite an easy one to demonstrate.

Consequently the fix is the variable casting arc. Bill’s one foot at a time drill, starting with a short line length, minimum power increasing arc and speed to max power, pulling back to minimum power and narrow arc... and then increasing line carry by one foot (metre) and repeat is a good way to break the fixed casting arc.

Often the variable casting arc is a lightbulb moment by the way.

One thing just came up.
Doesn’t it make more sense to say “insufficient arc for the length of line”, instead of “insufficient arc for the bend in the rod”, when giving instruction.
This might be harder to instantly visualize and seems farther away from the theory. But to me it seems closer to the core of the problem.

Bart, if you ever in need of "teachable" person or ", call me, i could use some help... might even bring camera

Will come back to you soon. Have to discuss with my wife, because there are many dates filled for this year.
