Casting technique during the Covid-19 pandemic
Hi all,
I really hope you are all keeping safe!
We are not allowed to go fishing in the uk, but luckily i can still go out in the garden
I've been experimenting with a LOT of different casting techniques today, and I have really started to favour this one for distance casting, closed stance etc. I am throwing the line directly over my right shoulder with a vertical rod, and I'm looking to develop this further as I actually love casting like this. I do that from time to time, I smash my stroke into pieces each season and rebuild from the ground up, keeps things interesting
Let me know your thoughts? I'm limited to my garden, so I can't get great distance. I'd love to keep my carry skill set up, but it's obviously not possible at the moment there's only so much accuracy casting to garden ornaments you can do, I keep expecting the plastic cat to chase the wool tag.
All the best
Nick

That’s pretty much how I throw at rings! Can’t see the embed code But on this page you can a similar stroke in Norway. https://www.sexyloops.com/flycast/accuracy/

Go on Paul! Excellent stuff mate, although you don't need me to tell you that
Have you tried doing distance like that? It's quite fun.
How's the lockdown over there? People still aren't taking it seriously over here, a house party was broken up the other day.
All the best!

You'll notice that's your rod by the way. Got the Hardy's out to clean and thought I'd have a cast, I immediately put them away and kept your rod out

Re: Casting technique during the Covid-19 pandemic
Lockdown here is pretty fkin serous actually. There are zero cases in Gerik town. I’ve just been through army road blocks with machine guns to go to the supermarket. That was successful. The next part is maybe a little bit more risky, but fingers crossed that before dawn I’ll be in my own secluded bay away from the madding crowd. We’ve been in lockdown for 11 days. It’s been extended to mid April. I imagine it may be extended again - we shall see. I have enough supplies for 4 weeks. If lockdown continues after this I’ll have to consider another supply run but we will think about that when it happens. I’m just looking forward to having my own secluded bay. I have about 3 days of ice, so cold beers tonight!
Yes I used to throw distance like this. Tops out around 105’. Stunning loops of course but after having taught this style for about ten years it was humbling in a good way to get thrashed by Jon Allen. It really opened my eyes and of course that’s when the distance search all began for me.
I do however believe that this accuracy stance is one of the essential ones to learn. Get really good at this, throwing at targets, and that’s one of the flycasting core skills mastered. I’d like to see a lot more style in teaching I mean
Cheers, Paul

From watching your videos, Paul, I got the idea of casting to a spool of tippet. Not that I hit it very often, and I'm not even sure I'd see it at 50 ' , but it's a nice small target.

Re: Casting technique during the Covid-19 pandemic
I practise my snakehead shots here by throwing at floating leaves - always pick a target! The thing about rings is they are a distraction, and you have to focus with even more intensity at an imaginary centre target. Rings are an interesting challenge. It’s a mental game
I think I wrote to you, one of the best things you can do for accuracy CI is to learn comp accuracy with the angle changes and the random ring distances. It’s much more fun for one thing.
The interesting thing is that with fixed distance targets as in the CI test there are lots of ways of measuring the distance - which are then considered “cheats” (if you don’t want the distances measured then make them random!!!).
For example you can strip measure everything after the first target. I would. There are also ways of measuring up the last target with the amount of line coiled at your feet. The first target used to be pretty much straight in according to the length of line you were supposed to have out, but they must have changed that - that was some time back.
Personally I would have no issues with any of these techniques - which I’ve heard described as cheats. If a candidate can strip measure his or her way around the course then I’m quite sure they fully understand target casting to a high level.
That said, I would thoroughly recommend picking up the WC game. It’s a good one and you can measured yourself off against some pretty damned good casters. You will see and importantly measure your improvement. And every examiner on the planet will know you know how to throw accuracy simply by the way you approach the task. That then is a clear pass because that’s over and above what is expected of you.
A lot of guys on this Board practise this and I know that they will all be willing to help.
Cheers, Paul

Dam! Glad it was successful, Paul! I fear that this will be extended for the rest of the year, well, until the tail end I think. It's been 4 days here so far. Absolutely, crack those bears open!!Paul Arden wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 9:54 am

Have you thought about doing virtual lessons? I think you would do very well indeed mate.
I haven't had a chance to bash out a distance cast with this technique yet, as I am confined to the garden. it's perfect for accuracy, longest cast you can make is 61' (I measured this a few years ago!) I still like sailing the loop over the fence when the neighbour isn't home. Obviously can't do that now, I'm afraid that I will lasso the old ladies washing over yonder............again.
I think I remember having that convo with you about Jon some months ago! I really like how it feels, my normal stroke has my elbow to the side of the rib cage. I see a lot of anglers use open stance, and even standing like that for throwing at a fish that's 5' away. It does seem quite odd to me, I don't play darts with an open stance, can't comment on a javelin, I haven't thrown one for 8 years.
All the best

Re: Casting technique during the Covid-19 pandemic
Yeah I think I might have to grow my hair and become a jungle man. That will make a change from being bald.
I think we do virtual lessons. If by paid virtual lessons then nah. If by more structured Board virtual lessons then maybe. I do kind of like the unstructured mess behind the Board. I realise that it doesn’t suit everyone, but it suits me and like many people here I think if it was structured we would die of boredom before CV (mustn’t forget the mask).
We have a recent signup who has to give a class for his certification. I’m hoping he starts this. My Internet is going to be hazy for the next 2-24 months so I’m hoping it’s going to be great.
Yeah 105’ is a nice distance cast unless you are standing beside someone throwing 130. It stops being a distance cast then. As a I wrote to you in my thought for the day episode, taking it to the far extremes of 105’, is damned good for honing technique.
Cheers, Paul

I second that, that's a great idea
I did mean virtual paid lessons, yes structured virtual lesson on the board would be a great idea, but as you say the unstructured mess its actually very entertaining! I think you are right, also you do like that emoji
That would be fab, would be nice to see people posting videos on here and having a good time generally.
Absolutely! As soon as this lockdown is relaxed, I'll be straight on the field with my tape trying to get it down.
All the best!
