Post by George C »

FYI
I believe that this is a new line from SA
True to weight WF3-8F
54' head in a 6wt
Optic green running line but pale grey head.
Billed as "The caster's fishing line". :???:

Full head weight on the 6wt (to color change:I didn't measure) was 285grains.

And let me add that it's a *really* good line. They came out last year and I'm so pleased that SA has released it. Yet, I'm frustrated by the fact that a tru-to-weight line has to be named "Standard". And that they market it as the "caster's fishing line" is a total disaster and a self-created problem.

Some day I'll go on the crusade and ask the right questions to the right people and try to understand why the AFFTA-standard was abandoned by so many.

That is good news!

The numbers look good, but how does it feel?

Stiffness, floatability, texture, slickness, etc...

Believe it or not, here in S Florida, we need different lines for winter fishing as our usual saltwater "tropic" lines are horrible when the water temp drops below 80 F.

Some freshwater lines are OK but most of the front tapers are not very long.

It is non-textured line
Very slick like all AST SA lines (and much better than the Barrio I own)
Its running line is thicker (.95mm) than a MED5 (.75mm). Probably in order to float better but it also ought to blow around less in fishing conditions. It seemed to twist a lot less than the MED but that might be because I had it stripped out into the backing a bit.
I cast it today in just above freezing temps so it felt plenty stiff. I'd think it would be fine in water temps <80 (although I'd guess the deck temp matters more than the water temp if sight fishing from a boat).
From the pictures on the boxes I'm assuming the front taper is similar to the MED5.
I did well into the wind with this line which I'd expect given that it is 6 as opposed to the 5 I've been using.
The HT#6 I recently built loved it........no surprise there.
What size saltwater fly it can handle I can't yet say.

Just a small fact.
It is the same taper as the Sharkskin ultimate trout.
I have the Sharskin and on the box are the exact same taper numbers as the Standard.
Great taper!

Cheers, Bart
