I could relate to your comment about I don't mind getting old i Just don't want to be unfit.

Personally I don't mind getting old i just wish everything didn't bloody hurt.

Ive been training up a kid in topiary today using fine Japanese shears after 4 hours my back and my elbows shot. Tonight Ive been weed cutting the reeds and bulrushes out of the stream with a scythe and gave up after three hours not because i was working up a sweat and my forearms felt like concrete... but no my wrist hurt.
I pulled out a fly rod to practice the 170 back cast and my elbow hurts and my right foot hurts, as i am writing this it feels like someone's punched my left bicep with a hammer and my knuckles aren't enjoying the exercise of typing and i wonder if arthritis has started..

Is this what ageing's about...... pain!

not long ago I could do a long hard days physical work and come home feeling burnt out exhausted, now I jus come back in pain!

The iron man sounds great but watch those joints ( especially with the running) treat them like they are rare, precious, expendable and mostly irreplaceable!
I m a few years past you and i really wish Id not been quit so eager to dress stone, load up concrete mixers, and abuse my joints quite so much, when their were labourers to do that work... its payback time!
Ageing is about being sensible ( apparently :) )

I think you might be amazed at the demographics of Ironman. 70% of the male field of over 40. There are more 60-65yr olds than 18-30yr olds.

Maybe there is some genetics involved. My great great aunt was playing tennis in her 90s. She lived to be 108. However I think living a sedentary life is the opposite of what we should be doing.

Ironman (and most of the training) is Zone 2. Here are a couple of excellent podcasts:
