Unlike Lars, I have neither mom's knitted socks nor the coordination to hold a pencil between my toes. I use a book laid on the counter, the lines inserted between the pages - more pages, more tension. It's trivial to get the tension one wants.
I suggest using a book one does not care much for; I use anything written about Euro nymphing.

Re: Spooling
I’ve always applied the tension to the line with the fingers just prior to the spool. Pencil or screwdriver between the knees. The truck aeriel makes a good alternative if it’s still there.
Are there books on French Nymphing? I’d like to see a book about how to hold fish without looking like you have a small penis. In fact I may write it.
Cheers, Paul
