Greetings from Santa Clara California and thanks to Paul for activating my account! Recent transplant from Toronto Canada and also recent convert to flyfishing from 30 years of conventional Took up fly fishing a couple of years ago after finding a tfo combo on sale and catching a small mouth at a creek by my house even though my casting and technique were awful(still is). Since moving down here Ive been going out with guides to up in Redding and the trinity as well as the Feather and nymphing for Steelhead. Really taking the next few months to work on my cast which will take my obsession to the next level with my goal of landing big Tarpon in the Keys on the fly after previously only doing it on conventional.
Excited to be here and interact and learn from all teh amazing anglers that are on this board!

Re: Hello from Santa Clara!
Hey there, welcome!
There used to be two casting ponds at a park on the edge of Campbell and Los Gatos, not too far from you - right on Los Gatos Creek near 17 and San Tomas. I haven't been there in years, and I recall there being some fences that would impair serious distance casting, but it would be a great place to practice accuracy. I don't know if there's still an active local community maintaining the ponds and running casting events, but from a quick glance Google Maps it looks like they're still there? https://maps.app.goo.gl/Lozo6M2i1GKh9N1BA
Of course, you're also not far from our niche's own little mecca, the Golden Gate Casting Club up in SF. But that can be a long ride if you're in the South Bay, even if you go 280. It's still very active though, and it's a cool place to hang out.
If you're going to be transitioning from freshwater to saltwater, have a glance at the new-ish Saltwater Skills Ladder that the FFI published earlier this year. A few of us here have been working with them on that for a few years - the objective was to provide a user-friendly methodology to isolate and practice certain skillsets that are critical to saltwater fly fishing but which aren't often practiced by most freshwater fly anglers.

They might make you sign up to get access, but it's free - you're just joining a mailing list. I'd love to hear whether you think it's useful!
