Hi everyone,
what are the most important teaching skills for someone who wants to help people becoming better fly casters and improving their fishing?
Thanks
Bernd

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685

Got a Q++ at casting school, wearing shorts ;)

For me analytical skill is paramount, can't identify and apply a remedy if the causal issue is not recognised.

Hi John,
besides all other (proper) skills, which have been listed yet, that to me is the most important skill of all. And it is here, where (to me) the quality of all teachers spreads the most.
Thanks,
Bernd

There is a basket of skills which are surely all equally important. Knowledge of the subject is plainly necessary but amongst other things good teacher needs to be an inspirational communicator too.

There is no point, for example, in being the best fault analyst in the world if you are not able to communicate a remedy in a manner which is empathetic and which is within the capacity of the student to perform. In this case you have two necessary skills which need to be complimentary in order to deliver an effective outcome, one without the other is near useless.

Ranking one above the other is a kinda "my top ten albums" game, very subjective...

...Dark Side of the Moon... IMO...

the most important skill in teaching someone casting is to be able to get in his skin and his brain .

in other words , teacher has to be able to observe, act, think and feel on the way his student does it , while in the same time he (FC teacher) must be able to see him self (that the same FC teacher) trough the eyes of his student .

only than those two guys will be on the same page and teaching/learning can flow naturally .

only on that way teacher might be able to predict 90 % percent of students actions, reactions ,questions ,misunderstandings and as most important - enlightenments in handling rod and line !

Cheers,
Zoran

Mark and Will, while I agree with the obvious point in Mark's reply, Bernd did write skills as in plural :)
