Was there ever a conclusion reached regarding the most effective stroke for distance? Is it better to separate the translation from the rotation (as far as it's possible) or does it make no difference if the two are superimposed throughout the casting stroke?

James,

I think the consensus was that it seemed to differ by person!

Best choice would be to translate around maximum rod deflection. A translation has not the lever effect of the rotation, so it is better to displace the highest force possible. And this corresponds to max rod deflection, late in the cast. I would say it takes place as you rotate the wrist.

Hi Merlin,

There's no way I could maintain max rod deflection with translation only as I cant' accelerate my hand at a high enough rate (I doubt anyone else could either). Trying it would lead to tails. So, in practical terms, you're saying superimpose the two?

James,

The idea is not to try keeping the max deflection, which is impossible, but just to take the opportunity to move a force of high intensity with the translation, which produces a fair amount of kinetic energy into the line. The force is highest around the maximum deflection point.

And yes, it means superimposition of translation with rotation.

That's my personal experience as well, to load the rod early and moving it forward through translation. In order to do that i don't rotate wrist to much, i pull my elbow down/forward and move my body. Rest of the wrist comes in later together with haul

I think the consensus amongst everyone I know is that it's best to rotate late.

When i use the cradle and postpone it to the very end i loose power

What about the world champion - http://vimeo.com/103836388

Do you think things change with rod stiffness?
