Quick advice pls

Hi All
After reading Bernd's FP about techniqes, now I want to ask you something.
Im invited on the boat tomorrow. When we will be on the shallow water and targeting flatheads Im fine, but my mate told me we'll go to the reef where chances are for Snapper and GT.
I have floating, intermedium, fast sinking lines and SH of level T14.
I have few gummy minnows and clousers and few others.

1) I dont want to fuck up my day because I dont know what techniqe to use on this water
2) I dont want to like a looser next to my mate with sof plastics

What you reckon guys?

cheers
mike

Not a great deal of experience with this Mike, but I would fish the fast sinking line and a large closer. If you're not getting hits or deep enough, or if there's a current then the T14. Reefs are not too forgiving on flylines but from what I hear you need to get on to them. Looking forward to seeing some photos!

Cheers, Paul

The snapper will usually take the fly on the drop. You can use a floating or intermediate line with a heavily weighted fly for these guys. The choice of these lines allows you to strip the fly up through the water column and then feed line back out so the fly drops. You'll get multiple drops with that technique, whereas with a sinking line, you get only one chance at them. This method works in water up to about 15m deep, as the fish will come up to a falling fly. The pauses should be in the order of 20 to 30 seconds long and you should feed line out to make sure the fly is falling, not being dragged by the drift of the boat or by currents.

Obviously, GTs prefer a fast moving fly, so I guess if both fish are in the same area and you want to target both on the same cast, make sure you strip quickly between the pauses.

Edit: I see you have Clousers and gummy minnows. If you don't have enough weight in the flies themselves, add a 000 or 00 ball sinker into the loop knot.

Cheers,
Graeme

Cool
Thanks for the tips Graeme.
I do have sinkers as well.
I very exited, I saw pictures of the fish my mate cought, so he is bulshiting.
Now few hours of casting, finising few more minnows, strech the lines and be ready by 4am at marina.
I will very disapointed if i dont catch fish.
Till tomorrow then
ciao

Fishing the drop is interesting Graeme. That sounds like a lot of fun. Sounds like a quick drop works too!

Cheers, Paul

Hi Mike
for GTs you need as big a fly as you can cast. Big and flashy.

Hi Peter, I think I got my old pike fly called "sparkle", big long and nothing else but flashy.
I red yesterday Peter Morse's book" A few great flies....and how to fish them" awsome book.
Now my main focus will be on FDR
-fly
-depth
-retrive
I spoke with my mate and ask him what will be our main target, he said snapper, bit two weeks ago he hooked up to a tuna, and was glad to loose it otherwise he would spend all day fighting it.
Aparently on the way from marina to the fishing spot we can come across feeding tuna or mackrel- he doesnt target them, he said if we see somethimg we'll give it a go.

My set ups
Hot torpedo with Barrio 6wt floating with poppers
8wt with rio OBS intermedium
9'6" 8wt with 28' of T14

All my tippets are 12lb to start.

Fucking hell I feel like im going FF for the first time. we'll be fishing till dark.
ok its 3.30am time to go.

I hope to back up all this writing with some pictures

I think you're under-gunned there Mike. Good luck though.
