How many times does one have to go, to get a lucky try?

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685

It's not about luck. It's about not being unlucky.

I would compete if the travel costs involved were not so horrendous. There are no casting events in Western Australia, and even getting to an event on the eastern seaboard would be too much for my budget (I would rather spend that time and money fishing).
To compete overseas is out of the question.
Cheers,
Graeme

Costs are always high. Seek sponsorship. That's what I was doing with team GB. Easier now I think - for me (Jersey) and England anyway. Hard in UK and you need go commercial which is where some other teams have an advantage. Ultimately that's where Norway/Sweden/Estonia lead. But Team Australia should be highly funded too.

I think this may get a slightly different issue when traveling all the way from Australia...Paul Arden wrote:That's why you have to go more than once. I talked to Fredrik last comp when he failed to make the finals, because of the wind. He said, "I was lucky last time, unlucky this year." That's the right perspective to have.

What am I going to tell my sponsor, if the lucky guy casts 10m further? "Oh I was well prepared but unfortunately got unlucky." I would not feel good about being sponsored before the whole contest would happen indoors. Or at least I would want wind datas next the results.Paul Arden wrote:Costs are always high. It would be at least two guys casting 10 meters further
And a third place isn't that bad!

How hard is it to get sponsorship as an unknown caster entering his first competition? Especially when in a city with only one specialist fly shop and no certified instructors? Costs to compete are high, the market for sales is tiny.
I'm not saying this can't be done, but how does one approach the problem?
