One from today. The way it hit the fly and fight I thought its twice as big.
Nice end of the the morning after 3h of casting.

I thought I's show my favourite spot on the Hampshire Avon and the last (and biggest) fish I caught this season.

There are several club members actively seeking Barbel on chalk streams over the winter. It's way too specialist for a beginner such as myself - perhaps next year?

I've only caught them in Spain where they are a different sub-species i believe and not very difficult. In the UK I believe they are very difficult. But they will eat!
If you can see them I think you should be able to Nymph them.
Cheers, Paul

That's looks a stunning spot Neil...
I've caught barbel as a youth in my coarse fishing days, chunk of luncheon meat ledgered loosely to the bottom... about 8lb was my largest... went like a train, even more so in the strong current on the lower River Ribble. I'd love to catch one on the dry, I've seen videos of them being caught in Spain, close in shallow water, sight fishing.... looks a great way to spend a day. I know they refer to them as the freshwater bonefish, on a light fly set up they'd be fun

Got one today.
Even small one gives a lot of satisfaction after a long break.
