Thanks Paul. The weekend approaches. I have a Rio 9' leader as mentioned. The butt section is much heavier and with the help of a micrometer can be trimmed to taper nicely to the fluoro tippet.

I use perfection loops to attach the butt to the flyline. This might be a bit bulky with the heavier leader?

Hi Rowland, yes it isn’t and will get stuck in the rings if you strip it to there while retrieving or fish playing. A 2.5-turn Needle Knot is the slimmest and what I use 90% or the time.

Cheers Paul

I picked up an SA Anadro 5WF F Sharkwave - old stock. It casts well, even with my meagre skills.

As recommended, I tied 6' of 4x Rio leader butt (0.6mm) tapering to 0.30 and then 4' 0.25 plus 4' 0.17 STROFT.

Roll over is very good. But the point needs more weight and streamlining. Tippet tangles around the top of the leader butt transitioning from the back to forward cast are common. The only sure way (to avoid leader tangles) is to lay out the line over two or three casts, gradually increasing distance.

Best distance is 40 - 45' of line, plus 9' for the rod and 14' for the leader. Not bad. Caught two small Rainbows to boot - mid Winter - no closed season on the water.

I can work with this and it goes without saying that the rest is up to me.

I have been using one of these ,from Snowbee.
sadly they only go down to #6.
I need to thank ACW for this post on the first page. I bought one of these lines hoping it would be something I'd use in the MCI exam. It is.

Cheers,
Graeme

You are welcome ,not often this luddite can input for you serious casting people ACW is not the most elegant caster, but I have learned to be efficient ,age has made me need to conserve energy.
On the energy conservation front I am considering using a bonus from work to get a #4 9footerfor lite line dry and nymph for my local resser, sage orvis or maybe a HT.
what does the board suggest????

It's pretty hard to go past the HT4. If I needed a 4wt, it's what I'd be buying.

Cheers,
Graeme

I’m another fan of the HT4, which is surprising because I expected it to be a broomstick. To be honest, I liked it almost immediately.
