Confused over head length.

#1

Post by thedeadskunk » Sun May 31, 2020 5:46 pm

I am using a Barrio GT 125 #7 weight fly line for my practice etc.
Barrio state the head to be a finely balanced 73ft.
I'm an engineer by profession, or was in a past life, and I have taken vernier calipers to the head and disagree with that taper drop off.

I wish to mark the line at the correct point, just to see how much I can carry and add.

Can anyone advise as to where they mark up that line for what they see as the taper or drop-off change?

There, that's two question in an night, or day, depending where you are.

Thanks
Paul

All linemanufacturers only state their target lengths and weights, reality seldom agrees 😉

I have a old 5 weight, will run the calipers over it when I get home, and post the result.

If you want a line to improve carry, get a dt, wf's rarely do well when too far into overhang.

The above pretty much covers it :) even expensive lines have some variation in them, but the higher priced ones tend to be more accurate.

I'm with Lasse regarding using DT to improve carry. You could do what i do and mark the line at 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90' from the needle knot so you know roughly how much you are carrying. To know exactly how much, you could take some electrical tape and mark off the point by your hauling hand where you feel you were in complete control, and not pushed to your absolute limit.

All the best

Stated measures are one thing as said above, but production precision is another and there are variables. Back when I worked in a tackle, I would sometimes weigh all the lines of a certain model and weight and the total weight was sometimes 10-15% off from line to line. That could be due to a longer running line, an over all too heavy line etc., but it tells a story of production precision.

Which Tackle did you work in, Lars?
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.

Here in Oz, we also refer to wedding tackle, but I don't think Lars was dealing with wedding tackle at work. :)

Measured my 5 weight, the clearest end is at 67 feet, next clear difference is at 105 feet, and the length clocks in at 128 feet before stretching.

So the Barrio has a shorter head than the MED? I've not measured any other than weighing them to make sure they comply to the BFCC line weight rules.
