Cheap fly reels that don’t self-wind

#1

Post by Paul Arden » Wed Jun 24, 2020 12:26 pm

Hey guys,

I’m going to need some cheap fly reels for Sungai Tiang project. Not the ones that free spool in while casting, but with a clicker. Who makes them nowadays? Who can I ask nicely to sponsor the project?

And once again, if you have anything at all laying around in your shed, or man cave, that you don’t use and is collecting dust, then please please send it over!

Thanks,
Paul

Last time I send you a reel, you dropped it in the lake ;-)

Aren*t all the cheap reels made in China these days? Looking at Wish, there's a ton cheapos, and they're quite ok, even if you can't take the brake apart for service...

Haven't got any reels spare, but I might have a few old rods, it was 4-7 weights right?

Cheers

Yes mate - that would be fantastic - thanks!!! I will accept anything right through from 2-10WT :D There is already an interest in Snakehead.

And I didn't exactly "drop it in the lake" :p A hurricane came through :D

Thanks, Paul

Great thanks man. I have a couple of 8WTs on the way. One from Alex and another from Ronan. I'm donating a 5WT. Rods around 4-6 would be very useful indeed.

Thanks! :)

Brilliant - thanks Vince!

Funny I was thinking about Polaroids last night. Yes we most certainly do! I have never seen an Orang Asli wearing prescription glasses - that are bound to need them.

I think self winding reels were designed to make you feel good about your casting - they always give that little buzz of appreciation as your line pulls tight at the end of every cast :D :D :pirate:

For casting and reels that self wind, I use rubber band or hait tie which is on the reel foot. Whem needed line length is out, I take the loop around the handle and no more winding.

In fishing I do not like the self winding, but I like the possibility of hitting the spool to quickly wind in line. These happen to be two sides of the same coin thou.
I'm here just for the chicks.

I like that idea Sakke. My favourite reels self wind but it doesn't bother me. I got into a habit of pulling a few inches of line after each cast, which doubles as a check that I don't have line wrapped around the reel after an errant cast.

Cheers,
Graeme
