What line for an 11' 3wt?

#1

Post by onyxweb »

I couldn't take it any longer, and I've gave-in to the pressure!

I am building an 11' 3wt - blank from Bloke Rods: https://www.blokerodblanks.co.uk/produc ... -rod-blank

But...what line to put on it?

I'm going to be using it, mainly for loch (lake) fishing from bank and boat, for brownies.

Your wisdom & guidance is much anticipated!

Thanks,

Bass

Hi

Why don’t you write an email to the company, and ask them what lines (or line weights) they themselves recommend?

Anyway, just a suggestion, as I have no idea what line you should use.

While I have absolutely no use for such, I had to promise myself not to ever play with one again, or I would be in the same condition as you.

Casting an 11' 3wt has been the most enjoyable rod-casting experimentation that I have ever tried. I went immediately past just smiling into complete out loud laughing. For those of you who do not believe in casting by feel, I challenge you to pick one up and deny how casting one "feels".

And, now I see you have picked out a line. I would still suggest you check out Mac Brown's website as I believe the 11/3 is one of his favorite kits for fishing. If a line rec is not on his page, I'm sure he would respond to an email.
With appreciation and apologies to Ray Charles…

Fabulous, thank you for the encouragement!

That Sunray isn't available, at the moment, so will take a look at that site you mentioned.

Thank you, again.

I'm using a Bario SmallStream on my 10' #3 ( Shakespeare affinity ).
Really like this setup. Cheap but performs very well for me.

Your friendly neighbourhood flyslinger

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685

Got a Q++ at casting school, wearing shorts ;)

Well the name “Switch” and the website talking about Spey Lines and fishing streamers for me says it’s a light two handed rod. I don’t know of a specific line but I would be thinking a 5WT(+) line with… 50’(ish) head? But there are a lot of variables in that.

Used as a lochstyle single handed rod, certainly a lighter line, but it’s difficult for me to imagine an 11’ #3. Finding a true to weight 3WT flyline… SA certainly.

Cheers, Paul
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.

Good question!

Not sold as such, but the 11'3" #7 they sell is easy to cast with one hand...not som much the #9 ;-)

So...I'm building this 11'3" #3 as a single hander :-)
