For comparison of body mechanics some suggest javelin throwing, maybe darts? Baseball pitching?

Nice. Similarly obscure sports. :D

I wonder if javelin has a bunch of people saying what if the woolly mammoth was under a tree or running through snow drifts?

I can't really comment about the biomechanical aspects of it, but I'm sure his reasoning and mindset behind getting out and skipping stones will resonate with a number of fly casters here.
