Can one achieve 100+’ with OSD? Like, when you guys compete in distance tournaments is the dominant technique 170 or OSD?

I ask because I was practicing in a field when two guys approached me questioning me about the 170 technique.

Yes, with ease - it's perfectly possible to hit 120 or 130 plus with OSD. This gets to the question of when OSD turns into a '170' - I don't think I've seen a satisfactory answer to this question yet, certainly not one that nails the definition of what a '170' is.
Incidentally, my other half uses closed stance to cast 120 plus (on a good day).

Yep. If I take the wind out the equation I found I topped out with the 5WT at 110-115’ with OSD and the 170 allowed me to pass 120’.
The numbers I think that matter here is carry. These were some of my carry numbers:
67’ carry closed stance weight front foot.
75’6 carry closed stance weight back foot
86’ open stance distance
93’6 170.
86’ is enough to get the head out at the top of the loop with the MED5 (just). So it’s still competitive. But if you have a strong tailwind your carry is going to suffer. That’s where the 170 comes into its own.
The 170 is by far the most dominant technique in the WCs.
(The “170” for me is “two back-to-back stopless delivery casts”)

That could also describe a beginner's 'windscreen washer' type casting stroke

That video is a perfect example of a top class caster showing the difference between a pull-back stop and a '170'. Unfortunately the issue comes with casters who aren't so elite knowing the difference between a '170' and just a wide stroke angle - the two are very different in my opinion. I've had a number of casters tell me they are using a '170' style and when I've seen them cast I've thought it was nothing of the kind.
