Building a 3 weight

I'm building a 3 weight.

I have done lots of rods in the past, but never anything less than a 5 weight before and this one is way skinnier than that. I need some tips about how to get the guides on neatly. I am considering grinding the bottom of the guide feet to make them fit to the blank more closely, and perhaps making them shorter. Is that worth the effort? Any other things I should know about assembling little tiny flyrods?

I hope this thing will make catching the little tiny trout that live in the lake near my house a much more exciting prospect!

Are you using single foot guides?

No, I'm using snakes. The blank is so damn thin that I didn't think I'd be able to get a single foot guide on the tip section anyway. The ones I looked at had wider feet than the snakes.

Hi Nick

I've built #3 with single legs and snakes. My first ever carbon build, I think I used PacBay minima guides, it was tricky but do-able. For my last build I used thin wire guides which give you a bit of elbow room:

A few ways to attach the guides, is either with a thin strip of masking tape or small drop of hot melt glue. On the UK forums, there a lot of people recommending Tamiya 3mm masking tape which is used for model cars which is lik rocking horse poo to get hold of. This might be an alternative:

Thanks.

I usually use masking tape to hold the guides, but I might try glue this time around. I like the look of the thin wire snakes. I'll have to look around and see if I can find some in stainless, the rod is likely to see some saltwater use so chrome guides aren't an option.

I do not know of any but I do not fish the salt...yet. Drop Jeroen a line if he's joined the board, I have seen his pictures of cod fishing with a #3 :oh:
