Re: Rods getting softer with age
The 5 weight rods that I have now are way stiffer than the 6 and 7 weight rods that I started with 40 years ago. I tried out those ancient rods recently and they felt like big wet noodles. Some of them hadn’t been cast in 30 years, so it certainly wasn’t a case of over use. I blame my memory!

Re: Fly casting / lure casting intersection
I did some videos about 20 years ago of me overhead casting with a two handed rod and with a long spinning rod. From the point at which the line was straight behind, the casting strokes were almost exactly the same. Weight on a string vs weight in a string, it doesn’t matter. There’s a table out the...

Re: Decline in Flyfishing
I have a short essay in the making about this topic in the UK We have numerous exclusive “fly only” clubs / syndicates / waters I wonder if the restriction is not about C&R; fish handling; et c More about the “class” of the person If my judgement is correct, it may be quite discriminatory If yo...

Re: Fly of the Month - October 2021
I briefly thought that braided marabou would make an excellent body for a damsel nymph. And it did, but it was an absolute pain in the arse to tie, and only lasted for one fish, so I did not tie another. The loose marabou tail seems to work well enough for me, whenever I actually go trout fishing.

Re: Florida Fly Fishing Trip
That is an impressively detailed fishing report! It does sound like about par for the course for your first flats trip. Most people miss most of their first few dozen shots. I think the keys are not the easiest place to start flats fishing. You don’t get as many short at fish, and the fish are rathe...

Re: Some thoughts on Bernd's thoughts on stretch in fly lines
I have been known to bang on a bit about fly line stretch in the past. I had never considered that there might be a change in the movement of the fly due to fly line stretch - I am not convinced that it would be a significant one even if there was. I do think that there is a difference in detection ...

Re: Shallow water strategy - Help breaking the code
Sounds like a place you could fish very effectively from a kayak or a canoe. These can be extremely stealthy - (I have a few times managed to creep up on pods of tailing bonefish so that I could just lower the fly in front of a fish. The first run is spectacular!). I would set up to slowly drift, us...

Re: Light rods for salmon?
Landed a 5kg chinook last week on a 6 weight whilst fishing from a kayak. It took a while, and the fish towed me a long way, but I don’t think it would have been any easier with a heavier rod (and landing a big fish from a kayak is harder with a stiffer rod). Most of the time I played the fish with ...

Re: Ribbed Grip
Interesting.
What kind of grip tape is that? I have a rod where the grip is so worn that it needs to be replaced, but as I would rather fish than work on rod repairs, grip tape might be the answer. Messing around with a rib at the same time of course!

Re: Permit - me too
Permit are indeed crazy. Spooky as hell, and yet quite often perfectly happy to snap up a tiny crab fly that lands out of nowhere a foot in front of their face. I have been much more successful with that tactic than with standard permit ideas. Taught to me by an old Mexican bonefish guide. “Hit him ...
