Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels
I'm afraid that spending money for Vivarelli is not going to solve your problem. The Decathlon reel has the exact same mechanics as the Vivarelli. I wouldn't like you to spend yet more money for nothing.

Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels
I think the basic problem is that semi automatic reels are designed to get a lot of line quickly back on the spool with only a couple of presses on the handle. They're not designed to pull fish in. You only have to look at the very small cog on the spool to understand this, one press of the handle w...

Yeah, that's what I've been saying for about the last 15 years or so, but my Scottish DNA always intervenes.

Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels
Robust is a relative term and in your case it probably has a completely different meaning. It is my go to reel for trout fishing. I have 2 and numerous spare spools. I fish max 5wt line here. I've been using them for around 40 years. I wore out the main shaft on my first one, bought a new one and th...

Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels
Hi, the Decathlon reel is a copy of the Vivarelli so I presume the 2metre retrieve refers to the quantity of line for one press of the lever. You can retrieve a whole flyline by pressing the lever multiple times, no problem there. Don't know about the Decathlon version but the drag adjustment on the...

Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels
Hi, I'm also a Scotsman but live in Italy home of the Vivarelli semi automatic reel the pic Paul posted looks like a Vivarelli. I don't know about other models but the Vivarelli doesn't have the guts to pull in a two pounder just by operating the lever. You would have to pump the fish in i.e. raise ...

Re: Physics Q/As for the casual reader
I'm with Andrew on this one. Physics for the casual reader is a contradiction in terms. It only takes a quick scroll through the physics forum to realise that this is definitly not a subject for the casual reader. I would suggest that Greenomad's/ Mark's Einstein series is more than adequate for the...

Re: Poppers - how much?
Why don't you teach some locals to tie? That would give you more free time and maybe provide someone with some much needed income.
