Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Hi John, I think an external cue would be to reach (or hold) back with the hand as the chest turns to target. I have a similar issue with casters not fully straightening their rod arm (or hauling arm, or both) on stopless backcasts. For them I have them really stretch out to imaginary targets in the...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Hi Torsten, I agree and we all have a different way of looking at this perhaps. For me a 110-115’ caster would be a caster who would reasonably expect a cast in 2 minutes of casting to land in this mark. Not the average but just the longest. That’s a very high level. It’s below competition level. Of...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I try to get my SW guys into the 110-115’ distance mark. Forehand and backhand. I think that technique level allows you to make 80’ shots into the wind. So one performance level above Lefty’s suggestion. It’s just technique and a measure of it. Carry is a better one for me. Somewhere in the 80 ft ma...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
That’s a good question Torsten and I don’t know. I certainly try to keep it a fairly low key because I’m as busy as I want to be. This week was 10 lessons which is typical. Some weeks I do 15 and feel like I’m working too hard. I do have other things to do! I could go full time, which would look lik...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
The previous comments I’ve made on these threads refer to how you teach “what” you teach. Historically the 170 and other distance casting techniques have been taught using direct instruction and highly internalised cueing, it’s usually instructor feedback dependent and error reductive. As you have ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
good point! But that’s not all I teach them!Yet you only gave Mark 3-6 months for the same task?
I don’t know about cost/benefits but most of my students are SW anglers. They seem to be the ones searching for help.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
So you’re possibly suggesting that we shouldn’t teach saltwater fly anglers taking shots because most anglers fly fish for trout? It’s funny that’s actually one of the main criticisms of the FFI instructor program in that it doesn’t properly represent or teach SW fly fishing skills and there was eve...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
It is. But isn’t the question then how to teach these? That’s the interesting part.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Yep they are not very difficult there, at least nothing like I have read about. It’s a different permit sub species too I believe and grows to the teens of pounds. It’s a cracking fishery however. Pressure obviously changes the behaviour of the fish. I can’t wait to fish and sail those waters north ...
