Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Peter Mackenzie-Philps also asked Jim Curry what he knew about entomology and then said “if it’s small and brown, Jim, put on something that’s fkin small and brown” :D :D A good man. I had a lesson from Peter MP prior to taking my APGAI entrance exam. A competition caster of high regards back in the...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Yep I was thinking about that Mark. For children athletes pitching balls I can understand why it is introduced early on. They are directly throwing the ball. We on the other hand, are “throwing” rods to throw lines into loops. That’s why I think the loop part needs to come in first. That being said,...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

How do you teach the distance backcast, John? A similar thing? I had a good student yesterday improve his backcast by pulling the rod butt in flat towards him. This motion is also coming from the chest.

Cheers, Paul

Re: fly rod resonation

Hi Vicente, My understanding is that we are mostly looking at how the tip vibrates after RSP2. Several things affect this. One is how tightly we grip the rod. Two is how heavy the line and whether flyline is inside the rings (or running or shooting line) and three the physical characteristics of the...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

It is. But isn’t the question then how to teach these? That’s the interesting part. Cheers, Paul Thanks John. I also have three levels. 1 is the novice caster. I personally don’t think we should be directly teaching them pattern or worrying too much about it. I think the entire focus should be on d...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Hi John, I think an external cue would be to reach (or hold) back with the hand as the chest turns to target. I have a similar issue with casters not fully straightening their rod arm (or hauling arm, or both) on stopless backcasts. For them I have them really stretch out to imaginary targets in the...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Hi Torsten, I agree and we all have a different way of looking at this perhaps. For me a 110-115’ caster would be a caster who would reasonably expect a cast in 2 minutes of casting to land in this mark. Not the average but just the longest. That’s a very high level. It’s below competition level. Of...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

I try to get my SW guys into the 110-115’ distance mark. Forehand and backhand. I think that technique level allows you to make 80’ shots into the wind. So one performance level above Lefty’s suggestion. It’s just technique and a measure of it. Carry is a better one for me. Somewhere in the 80 ft ma...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

That’s a good question Torsten and I don’t know. I certainly try to keep it a fairly low key because I’m as busy as I want to be. This week was 10 lessons which is typical. Some weeks I do 15 and feel like I’m working too hard. I do have other things to do! I could go full time, which would look lik...
