Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels

Strange. I don’t know how the drag system on this reel works. Maybe it’s possible to adjust it that you can operate the lever under more tension. That would certainly help. But if the drag is set and the fish is spooling you, then it sounds like you need more backing. However not being able to reel ...

Re: “Slide-loading” and minimal contact

Hi Gary, When chasing adults with babies I do sometimes lengthen the line outside the tip in preparation for a longer shot. You can see this in lots of videos; babies appear at distance and I “mend” the line length in preparation for a longer shot. It is certainly possible to cast further from a lon...

Re: “Slide-loading” and minimal contact

I should mention that the first two metres of fly line have no zebra marks and then there are 11x1ft black strips separated by one foot intervals. And next week I nail the bastards.

Re: The New Semi Automatic Fly Reels

Hi Scotsman, how does the drag setting work with the Allen Key? Could it be set higher? Some drags are pretty poor!

Re: “Slide-loading” and minimal contact

That’s an an interesting idea Graeme. I’ll have a play with that. Maybe another way looking at the cast is: Lift, minimal contact with line hand (can be zero) Contact with line hand when you would normally late haul, early release. Minimal contact while line is shot Minimal contact at the start of t...

Re: Elbow lift/drop or not?

Hi Gary, The down/up stops for me when I switch stances and start weight shifting. That might be very different when kneeling, I’ll have to try. Do you kneel on one leg or two (I suppose it depends on the stability of the canoe). If you mean by twisting the body to the right and casting in that dire...

Re: Elbow lift/drop or not?

Don’t know about guru, Gary. If the last few days are anything to go by “klutz” would be more appropriate in my case. While line carry length might be the predominant driver, I think of trajectory as being the dominant factor in line carry. For example with a very short line my front target is close...

Re: Long line casting - feet positions and movements

I’ll give you my thoughts on this, since I often find myself out of optimal position. For me it is definitely preferable to turn as much as possible lower down and try to keep the forward delivery as much as possible square to the shoulders; and with a backhand delivery close (but not quite) aligned...

Re: Backcast Delivery Help Needed

That’s great Bendix!! After the forward delivery is straight and vertical what I find good to focus on is how your haul and rod arms finish. Often I see a truncated haul or a haul that “bounces” and often before completion. 811F5340-1D57-40EE-8530-B432C0112851.jpeg You want to strive to finish with ...
