I don't know about carbon insert.
I have done fair few from old broken rods matching inside diameter and taper with araldite then binding the joints for more strength.

Used to fish for Murray Cod in dirty water.
The popper used to leave slime line on the water, 7 out of 10 hits was a miss, unless the fish follows the popper then it was a hook up.

I don't know about fighting the fish hard and short. Once I hooked up a mack tuna about 7 to 9 kg, using 10kg leader locked up to breaking point.
