Re: Casting long leaders

Hmm, okay, my bad. Sorry. Is there something going on in the hand that you're using to hold the tippet while you tighten the knot? Are you using a glove or some sort of cloth? Can you use different monofilament to make the leader, and if so, does it break in the same place? Does it break there, reg...

Re: Casting long leaders

If it’s breaking in a part of the line that has been in contact with the pole, it’s because the pole has damaged the line. That’s easily done if you’ve stretched the line around the pole. Cheers, Graeme That’s not where it’s breaking for the most part. I think I had one break there, but generally i...

Re: Casting long leaders

The material is probably a couple of years old, but has been well cared for and kept dry and out of the sun. Wouldn't material that has gone bad still break at the knot though? Just at a lower strength. I just find it very strange that I'm getting the advertised knot strength, but the knots aren't a...

Re: Casting long leaders

I'm back to being confused about knots breaking. So just to be clear about what I'm doing here, I have twisted up a few leaders in Trouthunter .015 most recently (22.5 lb tensile strength and 16.1 lb knot strength). I'm mostly concerned about trusting the strength and stretch of the twisted leaders,...

Re: Casting long leaders

I’m surprised that the mono is not breaking at the surgeons. The only time I’ve broken the main line is with Biminis and ten turn half bloods. I wouldn’t expect the twisted section to break. I would imagine after a huge break like that the leader will be catastrophic! I realized why my single stran...

Re: Casting long leaders

I’ll make one tomorrow. It’s a bit dark now. I did think about it while fishing last week. But then I got sidetracked  I've been doing my best without pictures so far. Haven't had a chance to cast one of my twisted leaders yet, but I have broken a few. 4>2>1 with a J knot and then a triple su...

Re: Casting long leaders

How do you know if you're twisting the leader too tight/not tight enough? And what are the drawbacks of each? How do you manipulate the leader to make sure everything is as it should be? Just pull it all tight? The two strand part is easy. As much as possible without it twisting the whole leader! F...

Re: Humidity, Air Conditions and Casting

I know this is a technical forum but I think it’s important not to overlook the psychological aspects as well. Every competitive athlete knows there are good days and not so good days when it comes to training. Sometimes the reasons are purely physical and identifiable and you accept it and do the ...
