Re: Does 6 inches matter
I wonder if longer rods may help some people pull slack out of their backcasts. I have a very experienced 80+ year old friend who fishes quite effectively out to 70’ using a weak under-slung back cast that never fully unrolls. Something between an oval cast and an air born scandi cast. His forward s...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
LK has dedicated a chapter on distance casting in his Salt Water book, there he has written you should aim for at least 100ft. Do you disagree? Pretty solid advice in my experience. Not that one is likely to get there using his ‘tips’ alone. Strong wind punishes casting faults. Practicing distance ...

Re: How to cast a pointed loop?
For what it is worth, I have trouble with the question itself as it may reflect a misconception, and one I know screwed me up. Seems to me that the question would be better phrased as “how do you form a pointed loop” . We cast fly legs. A loop happens because we (and other forces) pull on to the fro...

Re: OK... Rod configuration effect on the line?
There is lots that can be done during the stroke. It’s just that many people will tell you it’s only what happens during the stroke, which is not the case. Cheers, Paul Hi Paul Some clarification would help me here. From SL Definitions Casting Stroke: When the rod applies force to the line in order...

Re: OK... Rod configuration effect on the line?
Stumbling around in the fog of my ignorance, I’ve come to the belief that loop shape is determined by a relationship between where the momentum in the fly leg is aimed, where the tip is positioned relative to the fly leg as it ( the tip ) decelerates, and how much tension is created in the rod leg. ...

Re: Line configuration affect on rod
When we simplify the rod as a spring, the softer rod stores more spring energy for the same load. Sorry in that last sentence I should have written “bend” not “load”. You are correct George. I believe that stored elastic energy would be the same between softer and stiffer rods under the same load. ...

Re: Line configuration affect on rod
Otherwise we would be using softer rods that load more, instead of pokers in the WCs. Hi Paul Are you using “load” when you mean “bend”? When a given mass is moved by a given force by two levers of the same length but different stiffness isn’t the load the same??? Does a softer rod under load hold ...
