Re: Sloppy Rod

Hi, i think that rod has a similar action to the sage x (i.e a VERY soft butt section) with a long carry it feels strange, i've cast a fellow anglers one and i found the butt section to be very soft. My belief is that with softer rods and big deflections, people lose control of their tracking. This ...

Re: Loading (again) in Roll CASTING/Spey CASTING

Hi Mike, Very nice casting indeed  What do you call that first cast with the level drop by the way? I've always know it as the Mel Krieger long roll cast. It depends on D loop size and distances, but a softer rod allows us to move the line a bit more straighter than a stiffer rod with a bigger...

Re: The problem with lines

Hi Lasse, Not many post welded loops  but i have a lot of old lines that have them. A few new ones, Barrio GT125, GT90, Mallard, Ballistic pro performance series, Pauls thunderbolt 5 and 6, old cortlands and SA lines. Haven't measured Pauls DT yet. I think modern lines with factory welded loo...

Re: The problem with lines

Hi Paul, Let’s get a page up on measuring lines and start to populate that database. Both SA and RÍO are very open with their target weights. SA sent me a table of all the line weights. With RÍO they are often exactly one AFFTA too heavy (this makes it easy to recommend their lines for me, I just re...

Re: The problem with lines

Hi Paul, A video is a very good idea Nick. It will certainly save my fingers. What surprised me here was not the misunderstanding itself but it being a misunderstanding by an instructor. I suppose there are nowadays a large number of casters who have never cast a DT. Or even cast a true to weight li...

Re: MED Line for practice?

One of the lines I have now for this purpose, is a Scientific Anglers VPT in a 5wt, which is bang on in regards to AFFTA standards (according to the box... Hi Bendix, I have that line (in a #6) and it is bang on 160 grains :yeahhh: It's very good for spey casting, but i don't think spey tapers are ...

Re: The problem with lines

Hi Paul, What I take from this is the AFFTA system will fail unless we (or AFFTA) go out of our way to educate everyone. I think you need to do a nice video about it, Paul. Choosing tackle starting with the biggest fly you will fish, then a leader, then your fly line and finally a rod. Disadvantages...

Re: Longest possible static roll cast

Using a grass anchor tool is really cheating as even on water the anchor slides backwards 🙂 That said, with those rules, a brick on a string type lines are going to go the furthest. Cheers Lasse :D I'll do the same test again with no anchor tool if you like 😊, but you are right of course. I'll have...
