Re: sparse weighted fly short cast

Hi Vince- Thats a cool shot. I have one that is very similar where the fly leg is a bit more underneath or inverted. I move the rod similar to how you did in the video and when using the heavy fly, if I hit the speed just right it works great, but just the tinniest bit too much speed and the fly kic...

Re: sparse weighted fly short cast

lol Gary, you forgot 15mph wind. Yes wading, knee to mid thigh on me, waist deep on others?? :)).

But at least I couldn’t see them worth a darn either.

Re: sparse weighted fly short cast

Hi everybody Great stuff. Gary-I can make the inverted loop cast about which you helped me when we got together last year. I find it an easy cast with heavier lines but in this case, the weight of the fly with no wind resistance, would still kick off line if I didn't get the speed just right. Your p...

sparse weighted fly short cast

I have run into a cast which is giving me problems and I am curious how you all approach it. The situation calls for a very accurate cast from 30-40 ft (as the cast gets longer it gets easier), with a weighted but sparsely dressed fly in the wind with few false casts with a very quiet presentation r...

Re: Line configuration affect on rod

I suspect 99% of the guys casting a fly rod have no concept of the need to get the line ‘positioned right’, nor even what ‘right’ entails. It is just not emphasized (at least from what I’ve seen/read) as an essential concept. It seems, rather, that instruction is aimed at making it happen indirectl...

Re: Fly casting paradox (number 1)

This thread reminds me of a quote that seems somewhat arguably pertinent: From Douglas Adams. There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Pick a nice day, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] suggests, and try it....

Re: Step up drill

Hi Gary- Sorry, I made a picture and forgot to attach. I suppose you could do it in either direction but my intent is to begin on the forward cast. Rod plane is vertical or nearly so. Yes, it does break the 180 degree rule and the ground limits the amount of line you can use, but, surprisingly you c...

Step up drill

Hello All- I have recently started using a new drill on myself and a couple good casters with a fair amount of success. I will not attempt to describe why it works because I really do not know. For the two people and myself who have done the drill, the result is a straighter and faster fly leg. The ...

Re: glass vs graphite

Hi Everyone- This is what I take away so far from this thread: Gary (Mangrove Cookoo)" wrote_". One of the more insightful ideas I picked up here on SL was that the rod transfers energy into the line through three mechanisms: swing, spring, and whip. (Damn I sure hope I got that right!) I ...
