Re: Swinging for salmon

Expensive now, but I really liked Atlantic Salmon Magic by Topher Browne.

Re: Rio iLine 239 grains / 15.5 grammes

The iLine was a forerunner of the Single Handed Spey. I think Lee Cummings had a hand in designing it - the "i" stood for Instructor. So a rear-weighted short-headed line. From memory the 15.5g would be around a 6wt. Great for light-line/single-handed Speys.

Re: Pattern recognition

I’m the same for ohd casts Mark. Tbh I find it harder on Speys. I don’t teach a “one true way” on Speys either, but it’s tougher IMHO to isolate the different skills in a motivating way, without teaching a whole cast in some way. I’ll often teach the basic stages of the whole cast (e.g. a double Spe...

Re: Pattern recognition

Mmmmm… Interesting. I think I know what you mean, and can see that rather than teaching casts, we are teaching a set of skills which the caster then adapts to circumstances. So, a nice set of skills might be: Getting the line off the water Loop control (size, shape, speed) Loop control (trajectory, ...

Re: What do you need to know.

Great stuff from Mark. 👍 I’d add: My interpretation is that blocked practice is good for introducing new skills, and for beginners to get basic movement? Serial and random is great once the basics are sorted. The other really interesting thing is that there is a lot of research which says: 1. Althou...

Re: Teaching Spey

If there’s a single thing I’d focus on for all Spey casts, whether SH or DH, I’m going for a clean lift. In order to move the line around to reposition an anchor you have to get most of it out of the water under tension . Not enough line off the water? Excess line sag as it leaves the water? Both re...

Re: “Triangle Method”

I’ll usually go between fully open and fully closed and talk about the trade off between tip path length and tracking, modelling good and bad outcomes based on the straightness or otherwise of the fly leg. Provided they have the basic dance right, I let them play with it to find their own limits of...

Re: “Triangle Method”

I dunno, I think y'all might be violently agreeing whilst talking past each other :D I think you can prescribe a stance (or stances) as a constraint that allows students to explore different options. Getting people to understand the pros and cons of different stances is a worthwhile thing to do. If ...

Re: The Langiage of Coaching

I had a student who was struggling with hauling. His haul was v.short and stabby, and he’s was getting tails all over the shop. I started off just asking him to make sure his haul was smooth and that his arm straightened (internal cue) and his hauling hand went past his hip (internal cue). He strugg...
