Re: Current Stroke

We are not actually born with one or the other but a mix of both. Yes, that is what I meant when I used the word "percentage". Most folks have more of one than the other, and that is what determines their physicality. That gym trainer was only the first to relay that information. Later, a student w...

Re: Whole line out!

Years back, SA and Lefty Kreh made a fly line designed for beginners that had a "tell-bump" molded onto the line at the back of the front taper to give the novice a clue. Some anglers that I knew who fished primarily at night adopted that idea and put a tiny bump of epoxy on their fly lines. That wa...

Re: Current Stroke

Back when I was a gym rat and had access to conditioning coach, I asked for specific routines to improve my fly casting. The coach said he had no idea what I was talking about so I showed him a video of a champion distance caster. I forget who. The coach's response was, "Wow... that is explosive!" S...

Re: 180 "tails".

I'm just in from a play in the field with these ideas. And while it was a bit too windy to really experiment deeply, I did find I could create something like #2 on demand. Although I did not find a high trajectory back cast to be the most important component of the recipe. I found that I could creat...

Re: 180 "tails".

Morsie,

Just curious, but how do you differentiate between 2 and 3? Is it a matter of degrees (the angle between the crossed legs?), or the process that creates them?

I see both commonly, but not necessarily at similar locations in the fly leg.

Re: 180 "tails".

Morsie, I know that I call it a tail, but I would go with closed loop too. I am not particular about specific nomenclature. I do know that I find it a lot in these parts, particularly among intermediate saltwater casters. In fact, many seem to believe it is just the way a cast unrolls, and they are ...

Re: Fly weight & drag

Over the years I have found that for large saltwater flyrods, the stripping guide is commonly the Achilles heel. It seems stupid to send a warranted rod back simply because the ring fell out of a guide, but I have done it a number of times. There is currently a rod in my den that I am debating on wh...

Re: How do fish get away?

Paul, I have managed to reduce the weight a bit by not tying the tail materials onto a clipped hook shank. Instead, I whip a doubled over piece of mono to create the eye and some "shank", then tie the tail materials onto that. I also have eliminated the split ring and simply tie a loop knot that hol...
