Re: Setting the hook… or not?

Hey Ken! Welcome to te Board. In your case, flyfishing for trout in stillwater, I generally strip-strike (or simply lift the rod slowly as I feel the weight of the fish on the line). I'll strike by lifting the rod if I see a trout take the fly right after it landed - because in that situation there'...

Re: Managing mono shooting lines

Hey Johnny! I've used mono for more years than I care to remember. How long have you been using it - I find mainly that it's a matter of getting used to it. It'll slip once every now and then, certainly, but I live with that. Especially on double handers where the pull of the line is heavier, I'll s...

It most like doesn't exist anymore and if it does, it's probably overexposed by now...

I don't know if Grant ever write much and if the specifications for his line exists. That'll be worth tracking down!

Re: Movies of Grant Casting.

Yes, I have cast fully dressed salmon flies - never a 4/0, though. And yes, I too think it's possible to cast one 47 yards with a modern outfit. What I meant was that I doubt that anyone would be able to do it today, using an outfit like the one Grant used. The 47 yard cast was in a fishing situatio...

Re: Movies of Grant Casting.

Alexander Grant was certainly an exceptional caster, and one thing was what he could do in tournaments and on grass, but there are even a description of him hooking and landing an 8lbs salmon, on a 4/0 hook with a speycast at a distance later measure to 47 yards! And of course his record cast was ma...

Re: Lens for nature shots

In that case, go for a 70-200mm f/2.8 and an SLR with an APSC-size sensor, Nikon D500 for instance, but there are many other good choices. I just know Nikon best :-).

Re: Lens for nature shots

For that kind of nature photography, you obviously need a long lens. How long depends on what (if any) equipment you have now and how close you can get. For shooting wild life, I'd say 200mm is an absolute minimum (an note that 200mm isn't *just* 200mm, it depends on the sensor size of your camera)....

Re: Lock down days!

Our lock has also been extended until Easter - and further extensions could be coming. We might also be adviced against (maybe even forcved not to) travel between regions of the country...

Re: Lock down days!

Right - Piffen, thanks for chiming in, I did seem to remember it was jarrah (with an *h* :-).

And thanks Mark - it does look very similar to that fresh cut of yours, and of course, Piffen has confirmed. It'll be interesting to to try working with it.
