Re: Squeezing fish for the pic

Yep, I think that well-intentioned anglers used to one species (say carp, tench) often apply the same handling techniques to more sensitive species. If you treat trout and grayling the same way as carp, it’s not going to end well.

Education, and a precautionary principle is a good thing.

Re: Squeezing fish for the pic

Yep, there’s jumping out of the water, and then there’s being held out of the water for 30 seconds. I also suspect that this gets more critical the nearer to spawning time. Another reason for not fishing on redds and for well managed closed seasons. Note we’re only talking about steelhead and maybe ...

Re: Squeezing fish for the pic

A real slap in the face for me was reading some research on steelhead which showed that, irrespective of future survival of the fish that was handled, taking the fish out of the water even only briefly results in a massive reduction in egg viability (from memory something like a 50% reduction). So i...

Re: 90 degree change Single Spey

Wouldn't the competition just be able to move even more line around? Ah, see what you mean. I wasn’t thinking about a competition, just moving a ton of line around. :) I’ve never cast off a 16 feet platform but I think that would be very difficult. OK, maybe not 16ft. But it would be a little like ...

Re: 90 degree change Single Spey

Because if I was on a platform 16ft off the water, I think even I would be in with a chance. 😁

Re: 90 degree change Single Spey

I think you should be (at a minimum) knee deep in the water too. :pirate:

Re: 90 degree change Single Spey

Hi Paul

It’d be brilliant if you could get some video of your 90 deg. single Spey with 65ft of MED out of the tip. I’d love to learn how to do it.

I struggle to do that with a 65ft head and a 15ft rod! 😁😁

Cheers

Re: Weedless Frog

I tried his Gutless Frog for pike.

I had lots of takes, but none stuck. I was just using straight shank hooks, and suspect that some kind of keel hook design may have worked better. In the end I switched over to standard mouse/gurgler patterns, and got much better hook-ups.
