Re: Rod stiffness advice.

Hi Paul,
I can’t think of another manufacturer who produces a rod like the X. Some of the Hardy rods maybe?
Some Hardy and Greys rods are similar

Re: Rod stiffness advice.

Hi Barry, The X series seems to be incredibly soft in the butt section, quite a difference to what they normally do. I've tried the 590-4 (and others with MED's) and they all felt the same through the series. I didn't like the feel of a long carry with these, so i see where you are coming from. Sage...

Re: Rod Database

Hi Merlin, A source of uncertainty comes from the fact that Bill never described where he was clamping the rod. On a photo you can see that it should be up to the end of the handle. He specifies 33% deflection which refers to the full rod length. It would have been better to take the effective lengt...

Re: Rod Database

Hi All, I've just measured some rods, however, i'm not sure how to work out the ERN as i just added weight to deflect the tip. I would be grateful for any help. Black SL HT 690-4; 155.5g, AA = 72° Sage Igniter 690-4; 181g, AA = 69° Hardy HBX 690-4; 137g, AA = 69.5° Hardy Zephrus 690-4; 133.5g, AA = ...

Re: Chicken or the egg?

Hi Paul, The vast majority of anglers in the US appear to fish rivers. So I don’t think it’s more distance. I think it’s more feel. I’ve commonly heard casting is 10-2. If you are casting 10-2 with a stiff rod then a heavier line will cause it to bend more (unless you are Lasse!) and consequently th...

Re: Chicken or the egg?

Hi Lasse, mass is king and a heavier line does go further than a lighter one I agree :D the rod manufacturers thinking their rods are springs and a stiffer spring works better at propelling a line far. I think the big spring myth is prevalent amongst anglers because of this. We know that this isn't ...

Current Stroke

Hi all,

This is my current #5 competition stroke which went 120' 6", quite disappointing as i'm usually in the mid 120's now. I think it was down to the blustery wind limiting my max carry. Let me know your thoughts on improvements?

Thanks!
