Re: Pulling
If I had a super slo-mo video of it I could tell you exactly, but I don't, and it is the fastest part of the cast where a bunch of things happen almost simultaneously. As far as I can tell its happening like this as I can see it - elbow straightening, haul finishing, loop launched, line released, ro...

Re: Pulling
Yes, I see it as a follow through routine, which all sports encourage.

Re: How long are your 1-1 lessons?
2 hours. Just did 2 X 2 hour sessions back to back today down in Sydney with a couple of regulars (once a month) - 2 hour drive each way in peak hour traffic for me. Both guys learning Spey, both full of questions and both also keen single hand casters and both love to fish. For them I usually devot...

Re: Pulling
When you instruct saltwater casters to increase the distance they cast, John As a basic (no added inputs ie wind or casting at structure etc.) I want casters to keep their hand at or below shoulder height for most casts out to around 60 feet. When I first see many casters they are "flappers&qu...

Re: Pulling
That would pretty well describe it Bernd. I try to poke the rod into the trajectory of the loop at the very last of the straightening until I run out of arm. I guess its why I don't create the classic "sexyloops" shape.

Re: Pulling
Of course its all going to depend on how far you want to cast. I read a quote from Steve Rajeff somewhere where he was asked where and how his hand finishes up at the end of the fc. His answer "When I run out of arm". I spent a lot of time with saltwater casters who have been taught a real...

Re: Pulling
We've come a long away since that article. The ultimate outcome of pulling should be pushing, but from a very strong position. We push (or thrust if you like) to finish the cast, but to get into the best position to finish (in my view), we delay the end of the rotation sequence (the final speed up) ...

Re: Demonstrating tailing loops
And I find it also extremely rewarding. Getting someone to the point where they can actually admire THEIR loops, and catch more fish is very satisfying - even better when they send you pics.In my view it’s the most challenging, and most interesting, sector of the market to work in too.

Re: Demonstrating tailing loops
A straight as possible fly-leg I usually see in tight loops, no? Bernd the difference between a straight as possible fly leg for you, and a straight as possible fly leg for a weekend caster is going to be very different - so let me rephrase that - "a straight as possible fly leg for them"...

Re: Demonstrating tailing loops
"Tailing waves" is good, I also like "non straight fly leg". I don't initially teach tight loops Bernd, I teach "effective" loops. The goal is a straight fly leg, regardless of size. Tightening them up comes later. Unless they're a bit beyond intermediate, or exceptiona...
