Small flies - big salmon

I have fished for salmon a number of times in Iceland.
On some rivers small flies work very well but on larger rivers like the Rangas big heavy flies are needed.

I have used flies down to size 20 on the Nordura, Langa,Kjos.

In Canada around Gaspé small flies have proved successful on many rivers.

Colours as the sun sets

I think the title of the thread is a little misleading. As the sun sets then there is more red light. However when it is cloudy a lot of the red spectrum is absorbed by the clouds. Water, in general, absorbs more of the red end of the spectrum than the blue end. Which explains why very clear water a...

Colours as the sun sets

There is a factor that you are missing and that is distance. All this stuff about light absorption by air is only relevant when viewed from a distance of millions of miles. in water colours do change but this is only relevant when distance is included. From a few inches, if the water is clear, then ...

The most important thing, apart from getting the gear disinfected , is to get an official looking piece of paper with official looking stamps.

I live in Germany and I have always used the vet department from the local city.

Castable Shark Leader?

Sakke
You misunderstand me. The tide must be moving and incoming is best.

It is easier to see the fish when the sun is high, not the tide.

Castable Shark Leader?

Hi Andrew
It is easier to spot bonefish when the sun is high.
Unless you have tailing fish then spotting fish early or late is difficult. Incoming tide at midday is ideal.

Reels

I hope the Vossler Tryst is better than the older reels.

I have a couple of the S models.
They are well made but the start up inertia is too high.
What I mean by that is that when playing a fish off the reel then it needs a good tug to get the reel moving.
Not good for light tippets.

My favourite reels for saltwater fishing are from Hatch. They are beautifully made, light and with a superb sealed drag which does not stick at the start of a fishes run. I have used them for for: bonefish, permit, tarpon, stripers, triggers, milkfish, GTs and redfish. Also for Atlantic salmon. If I...

Castable Shark Leader?

Hi Andrew Where are you fishing? I don't know too much about shark fishing so I won't comment. You should watch the tides when looking for bonefish. The fish will come on to the flats on an incoming tide and that is the the best place to look for them. You can find all sorts of fish on rays and it i...
