Looks like the "indirect" haul seems to be an very significant contributor to Henry's back cast. A phenomenon that was so far underestimated (?)

Re: Measuring the Haul
Well really John, in #46 you have compared Johansson's technique which isn't backhand and casting sport related. You'd probably need to compare two backhand techniques, still I don't know why this is relevant for this topic.

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides
Hi Graeme, interesting question, I'd say it's in sync with the rod hand, because when you're moving / rotating the rod hand faster the distance between stripper guide and the haul hand is also increased at a higher rate. I think we're rather interested in increasing the line speed and less about the...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides
Hi John, as witten in the physics section, different techniques for different purposes, you can't compare them IMHO. Feuerstein's haul is related to off-shoulder or backhand casting, that means for a right handed caster you move the rod across the left shoulder while facing the target with your body...

Re: Measuring the Haul
Hi, I have no idea why you guys want to compare two very different techniques for different purposes - apples to oranges. One being a off-shoulder cast for special fishing situations and the other a casting sport technique (5wt line / tarpon rod). Better continue this in the flycasting section. Mayb...

Re: Tracking and Loop planes
Hi, "plane" seems to be flat by definition: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plane "a : a surface in which if any two points are chosen a straight line joining them lies wholly in that surface b : a flat or level surface" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plane_(mathematics...

Re: Tracking and Loop planes
Hi Paul, I'm wondering if we can apply the adjective "straight" to a plane (?) how is this defined in English? Lines can be straight. Line (aka straight line) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_(geometry) Curve (aka curved line) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curve Plane (aka flat surface) ...

Re: The most accurate fly rod
Hi Graeme,
(I think it's possible to get at least close to a vertical USD loop, better than Bernd's sequences suggest)
Greetings,
Torsten
Can you try this with an "ordinary" fly rod? Here's an example from the office jungle
(I think it's possible to get at least close to a vertical USD loop, better than Bernd's sequences suggest)

Re: The most accurate fly rod
Hi Bernd, sure, with this style of casting you'll have also a horizontal component due to the flexible fly rod and counterflex. More important however is, what you're doing when transmitting energy to the line or with other words doing work. The majority of the energy is transferred before the tip c...

Re: The most accurate fly rod
Hi, I can think of many times where I would like a vertical loop orientation from a canted rod. In those situations, my rod does not occupy the same plane throughout the cast. The rod tip follows a vertical plane while the rod doesn’t. Sure, dynamic rolls, USD loops like e.g. Gebetsroiter style. Ano...
