Yes we get them here in suburban lakes mostly during summer.
Hard to keep the hook in the mouth specially with no barbs, great runners.
Best flies here are small bait fish pattern about 5 cm.
here is one off mine very fragile fish.

Hi Mike 3 weeks ago I got one from Anaconda on special, can't remember but less than $60 It comes in small bag you can hang it on your belt, breathable soft, it should be good enough for around here. I don't know about carbon insert.
I have done fair few from old broken rods matching inside diameter and taper with araldite then binding the joints for more strength.
I would like to see yours.

Used to fish for Murray Cod in dirty water.
The popper used to leave slime line on the water, 7 out of 10 hits was a miss, unless the fish follows the popper then it was a hook up.
