Re: Loop Dynamics

For those small number that do, it's only relevant if lift in the loop is something you are particularly interested in achieving and, on the evidence so far, you're not likely to know whether there was any at all because the effect, if it exists at all, is ludicrously small. Mark, That being the ca...

Re: Loop Dynamics

And that leads me to ask a theoretical question: if a loop is cast at the same speed as a following wind - does the loop front still lose energy due air drag??? Hi Gary, This is a very good question. As you probably know as a distance caster I like to cast downwind quite often (it helps with the eg...

Re: Loop Dynamics

I'm wondering whether we actually need a casting machine? Perhaps we can do something with a dropped loop i.e. two ends of the 'line' held so it hangs in a 'U' shape and then one leg released. Now this has been extensively studied, so we know the acceleration profile in air. As such, we can see what...

Re: Loop Dynamics

but I think it is safe to conclude that line losses are going to have a negligible effect on the roll out of the line. Gordy And I will bet you a pint or two that the losses will be very significant, to the point that the expected massive increase in speed, as predicted in various papers, in a vacu...

Re: Separating rod speed from haul speed

You're probably feeling the change in tension. The 170, especially with a shooting head arrangement, initially puts a lot of slack into the rod-leg by the tip of the rod. This is then pulled taut by the fly leg, hence the feeling of increasing tension. If you're feeling this then that's a really goo...

Cheers, Paul
The off-the-shoulder over-powered curve cast that a lot of people struggle with would become a doddle :p

Re: Loop Dynamics

I'm curious. I have very little familiarity with losses of that nature. I expect that the majority of the losses would occur when the line first bends (enters the loop) and when it straightens (leaves the loop). Have you got any information that would help bring me up to speed on that? Thanks! Paul...

Re: Loop Dynamics

Pearson's model.JPG Pearson’s model is similar to Gatti Bono's analytical model. The graphic illustrates the fly leg speed history in no air drag conditions for the level line you described. The calculation is stopped as the fly leg length reaches zero (there is only the loop left). Merlin I think ...

Re: Gaze Behaviours in Fly Casting Accuracy

When I practice competition accuracy I often just put small cones out and then either Tracy or I (depending on who's casting) measure how far from the cone the fluff lands - actually we have a tape marked as '5', '3' and '1' at the radius of the world championship hoops - this makes scoring quick an...
