New PB! 122' 3" with a #5

#1

Post by nicholasfmoore »

Hi all,

Thanks to James and Paul, i have made a significant jump in distance with a #5 (Ballistic pro performance) 122' 3"!

What made the difference for me? I think it was;

1. Practicing very hard with single handed carry, #5 60' shooting head
2. Stretching back on the back cast
3. Hauling hand straight out (i was curving before)
4. Running from open to closed stance on the final delivery
5. Practicing in the mirror every day, concentrating on applying most of the force after the perpendicular
6. Working on hand path in slow motion

Thank you very much to you both! I suppose my next target should be 130' now?

All the best!

P.S.

Forgot to mention, it was with Pauls HT6

Great stuff, well done Nick :yeahhh: :yeahhh: :yeahhh: . There's at least another couple of feet to be gained by using the correct length leader  :pirate: (Don't take Paul's advise on leader length by the way :D ).
Onwards to 130  (or 39.6m as Lasse would say)

All the best, James.

Great stuff Nick!! Consistency at 120' should be your next goal! As you get more consistent you'll find the odd cast goes mysteriously further :D :D

Looking forward to casting together next year! :pirate:

Cheers, Paul

Thank you all! :D I am very pleased with the distance, but of course consistency would be great. I was using a short leader (8' 6") so i will definitely lengthen this for a BFCC event, or just practice in general. Begs the question, what leader design do you use? Tapered leader + tippet or make a leader out of different diameters?

Looking forward to casting with you too, Paul!

All the best

I was always happy with a 9ft Río tapered leader to around 10lbs with a bit of tippet. In fact usually I don’t care and in the old days where everyone uses the same tackle it didn’t matter much.

I haven’t experimented much with taper designs for distance but it’s something I will do. I’m sure Sweden, Norway and the USA will have thoroughly researched this subject. What every team needs is a Leader Nerd :D

Cheers, Paul
