Origins of Casting Sport in Europe

#1

Post by John Waters »

Hi All,

I am hoping I can get some information about the origins of tournament casting in Europe. Specifically, any literature that mentions the sport and its origins. I need to establish a bibliography of such literature for a project I hope to begin next month and would appreciate any assistance anyone can provide. The sport's origins in the US are comprehensively documented in Cliff Netherton's 3 books, in the UK by the book The Angler's Cast and in Australia by minutes, documents and events recorded in Australian Casting Federation minutes and associated records. However I only have Charles Ritz's references for European tournament casting in his book.

If anyone has any knowledge of any literature that details tournament casting in Europe I would love to know the title, author, and if possible, publisher.

It does not matter if it is not in English, I can get it translated for this project.

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi John,

Do you know Mike Marshall? He seems to know a lot about the history of fly casting sport in the UK, although maybe not as far back as you want to go. I can put you in touch with him if you think it would be useful.

Cheers, James

Ron Holloway would also have been someone you would have wanted to talk, but unfortunately you would need a séance now. Magnus might know. I’d also be very interested to read about the history of our sport. I’ll drop Magnum an email.

Cheers, Paul

Magnum recommends Hywel Morgan, Jim Tomlinson or Mike Marshall. Can dig out contact and intros for Hywel if you need it?

Thanks Paul, that would be appreciated. I met Hywel in Melbourne many years ago when he was at an expo with Jack Dennis and a few others. He would not remember me from then but I would appreciate his contact details.

Don’t forget Peter Anderson (if he’s still alive)
