Thanks Merlin,
I would be interested in seeing some grafics for varying line carries as soon as you solve the split issue.
Cheers, Tobias

Hi Daniel

Have you tried putting a fly on your leader and trying that?Merlin wrote: The "leader only" casting case: For such cast one tends to use a sharper stroke with a "hard" stop.

Hi Vince
I am meaning "a neat stop", not a shock. The main parameters of this effect are the actual deceleration and the "mid" equivalent mass of the rod. If I consider cane, I have a higher equivalent mass but I may not be able to produce a large deceleration because of the inertia of the rod. it is the reverse situation for a graphite rod, and I was referring to that case.
I caught a trout on a leader only cast some years ago, I had to stop my stroke early (compact) to avoid showing the rod to the fish which was ahead of a big stone behind which I was standing. Lucky boy, on the first cast.

Fly rods are like women, they won't play if they're maltreated

Hi Daniel
I think that not being able to produce a large deceleration of the rod due to it’s inertia is a red herring, the problem is tip direction. If you bang in a hard stop with a cane rod, you are liable to stick the fly into the water in front of you and a cushioned stop would be more productive. I would suggest being careful in extrapolating the output of a 1D model to a 3D world.
